Diary: Joining the Junior English Language camp in Oostakker
Hi! My name is Luca and I am 11. I play soccer and I love to draw, especially Manga. My parents supported the idea of me improving my English at a language camp. I was really nervous at first, but now I am happy I did it! This is my diary.
Monday – First day!!!
Okay, so my mom took me by car and there were already SO MANY children. I did not know a single participant, but there was this one kid named Mathis and he did not know anyone either, so we decided to stick together. Our teacher’s name was Fri, and she was really funny. She let us play games, and sometimes you just forgot that you were actually being taught.
The theme had something to do with ‘Wicked’, which turned out to be a musical about witches or something. We had to pick a team, Team Green or Team Pink. I PICKED GREEN, because pink is not really my colour. We had to lift a broom and keep it above our heads, and my arms did really hurt after a while, but we WON!!!
We had a workshop in the evening and I picked Lego Masters!!! We built a really tall rocket.
Tuesday – Farm
We pretended to be at work at a farm, and we played handball and we had to do a farmer’s dance. Some of the boys laughed so hard they keeled over because they tripped over their own feet, lol.
AND THEN the best part!!! We had to collect eggs and all of sudden there was a fox (fake one of course, but nevertheless) so we had to protect our egg. We got bubble wrap and cardboard and tape and we made some sort of an egg shelter with it. They were throwing eggs from the first floor and I really thought the egg was going to break but IT SURVIVED!!! Some of the eggs did break though. There was egg yolk all over the place. GROSS.
Wednesday – Gangsta day
Today was the best day so far!!!
We had to wear track suits and everything was hip hop-themed. There was this rapper called AnNaH and she was going to perform but then she got kidnapped!!! And then we found her ‘dead’ in the dining room. It was fake, but it felt really scary. And then we had to find out who did it, just like a real detective. My team questioned a lot of ‘suspects’ and they all acted guilty. It turned out the ‘killer’ was her best friend!!! Something you see in movies all of the time. We cornered her and Sherlock Holmes (a teacher in a cool costume) made the arrest. I feel like a real detective now. Maybe that’s what want to do later in life.
Thursday – Beach!!!
BEST DAY EVER!!!
We went to Puyenbroeck and it was so hot but also fun! Picknick at the waterfront, and then some minigolf. I was not that good but Mathis was even worse, ha-ha. We played some other games too and we were just chilling.
When we got back to the camp, Chantal had made French fries!!! Everyone went totally bonkers. French fries are the best, try to change my mind.
In the evening, we watched movies and we ate DONUTS. We were sitting close to each other in our sleeping bags, it was very cosy.
Friday – Final day
Why is it over already?
Today was British Theme Day and we played cricket and quidditch like Harry Potter!!! THAT was so awesome. I want a flying broom just like him.
In class we learned that England isn’t a real country or something, it is complicated. Something with a United Kingdom. Whatever.
We did a Scottish dance, which was awkward but also funny. And we learned about ‘high tea’, it’s like having tea but in a posh way.
BBQ for dinner and ICE CREAM on top!!! And then: PARTY! Everybody dressed up and we danced and it was just the greatest closing party ever. I even danced with a couple of girls and it was actually not that bad, ha-ha.
Tomorrow I’ll be picked up. I asked for Mathis ’phone number and the number of a couple of others, too. We promised to stay in touch.
This truly was the best week of my life. I’m going to miss everybody so much.
