Louis is a proud staff member at Roeland camps for 4 years now. He talks about his overwhelming experiences with Roeland. ‘My journey started as a 13-year-old, when I enrolled with a friend for an English language camp. I admit I hesitated at first. My English was not perfect, and we had to travel to England. But hey, sometimes you just have to jump.”
A summer to remember
‘My first camp experience exceeded all expectations. The staff members were great, and the activities happened to be a perfect blend of adventure and fun. I discovered rugby here; I play it every year at camp, and it is fair to say it became a passion. At the end of the week, a ‘Most Valuable Rugby Player’-award was presented to me, imagine that’, says a proud Louis.
‘A great atmosphere emerged from the group, every participant could feel completely at ease. I used to be a very shy person, but at camp I found myself singing aloud Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody. I have a lot of beautiful memories of a summer filled with language and fun, and I have the camp to thank for it. I became a loyal participant from then on, until I was too old to enlist. Becoming a staff member was the only option for me to still attend these camps, something I decided without hesitation’, Louis says smilingly.
Enthusiastic participant becomes an Activity Leader
“So far, I count six camps as an Activity Leader. Roeland has definitely changed my life for the better, no doubt about it. I learned so much, and it also enriched my personal life. The best location I visited? Loddon comes to mind, with the absolutely fabulous Langley School which is my all-time favourite”, Louis states with confidence. “The interior, the sporting fields, and the ballroom with grand piano: it is the combination that makes Langley a unique place to stay. My last camp in Langley turned out to be unforgettable, with the funniest, friendliest, and nicest people ever.”
Magical moments with various participants
“I experienced my personal high note during the ‘On Stage’-display. The participants surprised us with a self-made – but well-crafted, I might add – stage play. Even the locals joined us to sneak a peek. Every participant played its role to perfection, so all the elements combined pieced together nicely. It is a fine example of how Roeland language camps offer a unique experience, and how a versatile band of participants can form a close-knitted group.”
“Roeland camps provide multiple advantages, like interesting field trips, singing lessons and interactive language workshops. And it is accessible as well, so you do not need to have an extended knowledge of the language you want to learn. The teachers are always ready to assist and encourage you. You will notice how your language skills and self-confidence advance. My own progress with English is a solid proof of that.”
“I can only hope my story has roused your enthusiasm to partake in a Roeland camp experience, or has instigated you to become a cooperator yourself. Who knows, we might meet next summer!”
